A Man Smoking a Blunt

I call this album "The Art of Smoking a Blunt". What are your thoughts about AI art? Does it excite you? Do you have ethical concerns? Is it empowering a new form of human creativity or threatening the very heart of the human spirit?

I generated these images with Dall-E 3. I composed the prompts with the help of ChatGPT.

In my previous experience with Dall-E 3, it tended to be very good at racial and gender diversity. This is not true of all generative models. For example when I generated a bunch of images of a CEO wrestling a crocodile in Midjorney, without specifying race or gender, nearly every CEO was a white man. When I input the same prompts into Dall-E 3, almost none of the CEOs were white men. Virtually all the images of CEOs were women, people of color, or both. It seems that OpenAI has taken proactive measures to address bias in Dall-E 3's generations.

For the pictures in this gallery, I did specify that the image should be of a man, but I never specified race. Interestingly, out of 45 images, nearly all of the men generated are white. The only exceptions are the paintings done in a Japanese style which seem to feature Japanese men and a single pixel art image of a black man. Given Dall-E 3's usual high level of diversity, I wonder if this is an overcorrection in an attempt not to stereotype black men as blunt smokers. Perhaps I'll do some additional testing of concepts that often have racial stereotypes associated with them. Let me know if you have any ideas for images I could test.

Here are a few examples of the prompts I used to generate these images in case you're curious:

Surrealist Prompt: A surrealist painting of a man smoking a blunt. The painting should embody the surrealism style, characterized by dream-like scenes, unexpected juxtapositions, and abstract forms. The man can be depicted with exaggerated or distorted proportions, perhaps with elements of his surroundings blending into his form in a dream-like manner. He should be shown smoking a blunt, but the smoke could transform into whimsical or bizarre shapes, blending with the surreal environment. The background should be imaginative and otherworldly, incorporating surreal elements like floating objects, disjointed landscapes, or illogical spatial arrangements.

Rococo Prompt: A Rococo painting of a man smoking a blunt. The painting should capture the Rococo style, known for its elaborate ornamentation, intricate detailing, and light, pastel color palettes. The man should be dressed in opulent Rococo fashion, possibly with a powdered wig, lace, and silk garments. He should be depicted in a leisurely pose, elegantly smoking a blunt. The background should include typical Rococo elements like luxurious drapery, ornate furniture, and possibly a romantic, pastoral landscape or a grand, aristocratic interior.

Bauhaus Prompt: A Bauhaus painting of a man smoking a blunt. The painting should capture the essence of the Bauhaus style, which is known for its emphasis on functionality and simplicity, with a focus on geometric shapes and a limited color palette. The man should be depicted in a minimalistic and abstract manner, using basic geometric forms and bold, primary colors. He should be shown smoking a blunt, with the smoke possibly represented by abstract shapes or lines. The background should be simple and clean, adhering to the Bauhaus principles of form following function, and potentially incorporating elements of typography or graphic design typical of the Bauhaus movement.
