East Timor Flag Math

When one of my friends read Part 2 of The Flag Saga, she commented that she wanted to use my flag musings as math problems for her kids. Inspired by that idea, my wife and I decided to list a few questions based on the construction sheet in the Flag Saga Part 3 that perhaps they (and anyone else interested) can try to solve.

Some of the questions only require geometry while others get into some basic trigonometry as well. I've tried to list them from easiest to hardest. These questions should be answered based on the pictured construction sheet with the sizes in cm (the one with 180 at the bottom) although they can also be answered based on the ratio construction sheet (the one with 1 at the bottom) for a slightly harder challenge.

  1. Find the area of the flag.

  2. Find the distance from the middle of the left edge of the flag to the center of the star.

  3. Find the area of the black triangle (ignore the white star in the middle).

  4. Find the percentage of the entire flag which is red.

  5. Find the area of the yellow quadrilateral.

  6. Find the length of the sides of the black triangle.

  7. Find the angles of the black triangle.

  8. Find the angles of the yellow quadrilateral.

  9. Find the area of the circle circumscribed around the white star.

  10. Find the angle between the dotted line which extends from the center of the star and bisects left edge of the flag and the dotted line that extends from the center of the star to the upper left corner of the flag.

  11. List as many of the angles and dimensions of the star as you can.

  12. What percentage of the circle circumscribed around the star is white.

  13. What is the minimum angle by which you would need to rotate the star around its center for the flag to have one axis of reflectional symmetry.

  14. If you were to move the star from the black triangle's incenter to its centroid, by how much would the star move. In other words, what is the distance between the black triangle's incenter and its centroid.
